Rhossili Youth Club
Thursdays 6:30pm until 8:45pm, during School Term
The Youth Club has been running at the village hall in Middleton since 1999
and young people aged 11 and upwards have loads of opportunities in a range
of courses and activities, some of which can even lead to extra curricular
qualifications. However, the emphasis is on fun at all times.
Living as we do in a relatively remote area, it is important that our young
people have the chance to mix with each other out of school hours and the
Youth Club provides this opportunity, both during Youth Club nights and the
summer holidays when the summer programme takes place.
The Youth Club was set up by three mothers living in the village and one of
them, Jo Higgins, is now Youth Worker in Charge. Charlotte and Josh Higgins,
former members, are now qualified youth workers at the Youth Club and are
working towards the foundation course in youth work. Tom Boulding, another
former Youth Club member, has been helping all year as part of his Gold Duke
of Edinburgh Award. Thanks Tom!
The Youth Club has always been supported by Swansea City and County Youth
Service and as such, SCC targets and requirements must be met by the youth
workers and young people. There are six main curriculum areas and activities
are arranged around these: community, life skills/issues, annual events,
adventure, arts and accreditation.
Typical activities are very varied and include jewellery making, barbeques,
wall decorations, tie dying, manicure, bingo, cooking, pottery and team
building games. Drinks and snacks are always on sale too.
During the long summer evenings, weather permitting, we try and go to the
beaches or walk over the downs.
The young people also play table football, table tennis, pool, volleyball,
parachute games and netball. We are looking forward to completion of the
garden at the hall so that we can use it as a play space. We also hope to
help in the design of plantings and upkeep of the garden. We welcome help in
this from expert gardeners living locally who can guide our young people.
The summer programme is arranged by SCC Youth Service and is open to
Youth Club members throughout Swansea. Four days of challenging and fun activities
including animation, graffiti workshops, paintballing, surfing, gorge
walking, climbing, night walk and camping take place in various locations
throughout Swansea and Gower.
To get involved, you must be aged 11 or over. Just turn up at the hall on a
Youth Club night and see how you like it. If you do, you can join
after a couple of sessions. Membership costs £5 a year and each
session is only 75p. So, why not give it a try?
